GED Reasoning Through Language Arts Overview

The GED reasoning through language arts (RLA) section is 1 of 4 sections on the GED exam. You will need to pass this section (along with the other 3 sections) in order to get your GED.

You can expect the following on the GED RLA portion of the exam:

  • Number of Sections: 3
  • Number of Questions: 46 + 1 Essay
  • Time Limit: 150 Minutes

Questions on this section of the exam will be broken into 3 main categories:

  • Reading for Meaning
  • Identifying and Creating Arguments
  • Grammar and Language

GED RLA FAQs

There will be about 46 total questions + 1 essay. The questions will be split up like so:

  • Section 1 = ~13 Questions
  • Section 2 = 1 Essay
  • Section 2 = ~33 Questions

You will have a total of 150 minutes. This is the combined time limit for all 3 sections.

You will need to score 145+ to pass the GED RLA portion of the exam. You should try to score as high as possible as a higher score could qualify you for college credit.

You can retake the RLA section. It is important to check with your specific state to see what their rules are for retakes (some states require you to wait longer between retakes, etc..).
