Am I Eligible to Take the Registered Medical Assistant Exam?
There are four main ways that you can become eligible for the RMA exam. If you have questions about eligibility or the application process, you can learn more from this informational PDF.
The following are the four ways you become eligible to take the exam:
- Graduate from an American Medical Technologists (AMT) accredited medical assisting program
- Have at least 5 years of experience as a registered medical assistant
- Graduate from a military medical service training program
- Have at least 5 years of experience as an instructor of an accredited medical assisting program
Does the RMA Exam Cost Money?
The fee to take the RMA exam is $135. If you need to retake the exam, it will be $100 each time.

How is the RMA Exam Scored?
The exam is a scaled score ranging from 1 to 100. To pass, test-takers must score a 70, or get 147 of the 210 questions correct.
Upon completing the exam, the test-taker will receive a pass or fail notification but that does not indicate certification.
As long as you meet all the application requirements, you should receive your certification by mail no more than three weeks after completing the exam.
